Understanding the basics of US visas

In most cases, any foreign national who wants to come to the United States for a temporary stay must take the appropriate steps for obtaining a visa. A visa informs authorities that the holder meets eligibility requirements and has the government’s permission to be in the country for a given purpose. While there are numerous paths for obtaining a visa, it is not always easy to acquire one.

For most visa programs, there is a significant wait time, so planning ahead for one’s trip is essential. Additionally, the amount of time it takes to process certain visas can be quite long. Nevertheless, a successful application for a visa can provide one with the opportunity to come to the United States for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Studying at a U.S. high school, college or university, seminary, or other institution
  • Participating in an exchange program, such as an internship, au pair experience or camp counselor
  • Conducting business of a temporary nature, such as attending meetings or negotiating a contract
  • Accepting employment through any of several approved temporary worker programs
  • Seeking treatment for a medical condition

Since Louisiana and many other parts of the country offer a variety of attractions, countless foreign nationals apply for visas as tourists. In this way they can plan their vacations, visit friends and family, or see the beautiful sights. No matter their purpose for seeking temporary admittance to the country, many find it is helpful to obtain as much information as possible about the process so they can plan their trips accordingly.
