Illegal immigrant families of US military may get legal status

There is great news ahead for the undocumented immigrant families of United States military members. Louisiana residents may have heard the news about a new Obama administration policy now allows for the spouses, parents and children of military members, to receive legal status and military benefits. This family immigration policy will greatly benefit thousands of immigrant families all over the nation.

The new policy is referred to as parole in place and was added as a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services “policy memorandum.” However, by doing this, the public was not given the chance to comment because the regulations were not published in the Federal Register. The proposal was also not submitted to Congress for approval. Some believe that this methodology is illegal, but Obama’s administration say that because the law is based on an existing statute, Congress’ approval is not required. The President can have a say in which immigrants he believes are a priority in terms of legalization.

The policy applies to active-duty military, reservists and veterans and many are glad that this policy is finally in effect. The policy will give military members some peace of mind with regards to their family and reward those who have fought for the United States. There are some people that are against the concept all-together. They do not agree with allowing illegal immigrants the freedom to stay just because they are related to a military member.

While there may be some challenges ahead, families of military workers who are impacted by this exemption seem to be relieved that they don’t have to worry about their status in this country. The wives of veterans can now obtain a Social Security number and driver’s license. They will also be able to receive health care and educational benefits. This opens up a whole world of possibilities for them to get out into the workplace and contribute to the family if she chooses to do so.

Immigration can be a complex area to navigate. Any Louisiana resident who is dealing with family immigration issues may wish to seek out assistance from an experienced immigration law professionals and understand all the legal options that are available to them.
